Howard County Council – District One Race – February Technology Scorecard

Howard County Council Districts Map I have done many posts about the Maryland Governors race and thought I would take some time to take a closer look at a race close to home, the District One County Council race. Courtney Watson is running for County Executive which leaves her current seat in play this election cycle. There has been a great deal of interest in this seat based off of the number of candidates that have officially filed. Currently there are four Democrats and one Republican filed to run for this seat.

I must admit that I got the idea for this post from an article I read from Marshmallow Man (Twitter handle: @53beersontap). He wrote an article on the various Democrats in the field and I thought it a good idea to put up a technology scorecard with links to all of the candidates technology outreach sites. Here are my takeaways from the scorecard above:

Jon Weinstein currently has the most followers (by a very slim margin) but Wendy is getting close. As she only just entered this race she could gain some momentum and easily take the lead soon.

Jon Weinstein and Wendy Royalty are the only candidates promoting something other than Facebook and Twitter (both have LinkedIn and Wendy has a YouTube page).

Kevin Schmidt is dominating the Republican side of the field (OK, he is the only candidate on that side of the field right now). His followers numbers are in line with the Democrat candidates. Kevin’s website is not my favorite. Two links that just point to PDF files just does not have that “professional” look to it.

Dave Grabowski and Lisa Markovitz are lagging somewhat when it comes to social media followers right now. No one in the field has enough for this to yet be a concern, but obtaining additional followers should be a key for these campaigns.

All of the campaigns should read: Social Media Mistakes By Political Candidates – Part 1 – Outreach. Reaching out on the other various platforms could benefit all of the campaigns.

I guess if I had to pick a technology leader among the candidates I would lean towards a tie between Jon Weinstein and Wendy Royalty. I believe the next month will shake out the difference between the two candidates and their social media outreach and I will have a better idea of who is the real leader. I would have to go with Kevin Schmidt for third today.

Of course the reality of followers, likes, and subscribers does not mean a lot when it comes down to voting in the end, but it is a fun exercise to do and makes a great resource for following all of these candidates.

I hope this is useful and look for updates to the scorecard every month until the election.
